Often mistakenly taken as an overhand or double overhand knot, Double Figure of Eight Loop or Double Figure of Eight Knot. The Figure of Eight Loop in the Bight is a simple loop used to form a loop midway in a rope or line from which either a hook or dropper can be attached. The figure of Eight in the Bight is tied mid-line or rope, not at the end of a line or rope. If tied at the end of a rope it becomes known as the the Figure of Eight Loop or Double Figure of Eight Knot. Regularly used by firefighters, climbers and anglers as it is readily tied, maintains its security and can be untied if not placed under too much load. The Figure of Eight Loop in the Bight does however reduce original line strength considerably dropping it to almost 50%. This is dramatically more than if you tie a Figure of Eight Loop or Double Figure of Eight Knot in the end of a line. That will retain 65 to 70% original line strength.
