Arty Look At Fishing

Fishing is one of the most popular recreational pastimes in Australia and has been a major source of inspiration for artists – from the quiet solitude of angling to the high-action excitement of competitive game fishing.

This fascination with fishing is explored in a new exhibition, Fish in Australian art, at the Australian National Maritime Museum at Darling Harbour Sydney.

It covers more than 170 works from well-known Australian artists such as Margaret Olley, William Dobell, Yvonne Koolmatrie, Rupert Bunny, Anne Zahalka, John Brack, Michael Leunig, John Olsen, Craig Walsh, Kenneth Macqueen and others. All with within the unique context of fish and fishing.

Paintings and drawings from fishing and angling books feature in the exhibition as well as photographs of amateur and professional fishermen displaying their catch. Plus there’s a fascinating range of art forms including scrimshaw, advertising posters and artistic displays of fishing tackle.

Unique items on display include the extravagant gold and silver game fishing trophy presented to Jess Sams for her record breaking win in the Big Games Angling Contest, Ulladulla in 1938; and 17th and 18th century European fish hooks recovered from shipwrecks.

Fish in Australian art is on show until 1 October 2012. Entry to the exhibition is included in general admission to the museum: $7 adults, $3.50 child/concession or $17.50 for families. Opening times are 9.30 am to 5 pm daily.
