| Crichton Gets Super Yacht Award
Well know New Zealand businessman, Neville Crichton, has been honoured in the 2012 World Superyacht Awards for his contribution to the world of super yachting. In particular he’s being recognised for his pivotal role in establishment the New Zealand super yacht building industry.Neville Crichton was given the award at the 2012 Superyacht Awards in Istanbul, Turkey over the weekend.Introducing the award and welcoming Neville Crichton to the ceremony, Ed Dubois, one of the worlds’ leading yacht designers and founder of Dubois Naval Architects told the audience that Neville Crichton directly was responsible for the enormous growth in the industry in New Zealand through establishing Alloy Yachts. This encourage the growth of other yards and fed the development in specialises big-boat companies like Southern Spars. Without Crichton’s input this multi-million dollar industry wouldn’t have happened, said Dubois.
Neville Crichton started to export used steel yachts from New Zealand in the late 1970s and found out there was a significant market around the world for high performance yachts with quality interiors. In 1982 he set up Alloy Yachts and, in doing so, started the super yacht industry in New Zealand.Crichton also pioneered a number of important firsts that were critical to operating very large upper sailboats. He created the first carbon fibre rig that saved five tonnes in weight (1990) and the fitting of the first furling boom to a super yacht (1992). Crichton also has enjoyed a remarkable career as skipper of famous ocean racers – mostly called Alfa Romeo. He’s best remembered in Australia for skippering the Sydney Hobart line honours winner Alfa Romeo, especially when she beat the reigning champion, Wild Oats.With Alfa Romeo Crichton he also campaigned in major races in Europe and USA. In that time he’s won 174 races including two Sydney to Hobart races, the TransPac and British Fastnet Race.Over the same time Crichton built a highly successful automotive import and distribution business, the Ateco Group, on both sides of the Tasman. This company is responsible for brands like Ferrari, Maserati and Citroen. And more recently it was responsible for bringing the first Chinese automotive brands to Australia and News Zealand – the Great Wall and Chery. |
