New Volvo Yacht Announced

Even before the finish of the current Volvo Ocean Race the organizers have announced a brand new class of yacht for next edition of the famous around the world yacht race.

Cost of running the current Volvo 70 yachts is obviously biting hard into sponsor budgets and this is why race  CEO, Knut Frostad, made the announcement yesterday that they have gone for a slightly smaller one-design yacht to contest the next two races.

The new Volvo racer will be a 65-foot (19.8-metre) monohull racing yacht built to strict one-design rules. It will be designed by the US based Farr Yacht Designs and construction will be shared by a consortium of leading boatyards in Britain, France, Italy and Switzerland. Under an agreement between Volvo Ocean Race and the consortium, a minimum of eight boats will be built to contest the next two races. However, the organizers are hoping they will eventually attract 10 or more teams competing with the less expensive yacht.

Work will begin in July 2012 and the first yachts will be completed by June 2013, well over a year before the start of the 12th edition of the Volvo Ocean Race that starts in Spain in 2014.

This brand new design will take the Volvo Ocean Race into an exciting new era, said Knut Frostad at the announcement in Lorient, France yesterday.

Despite being five feet (1.5 metres) shorter, the new boat is expected to be almost as fast as the current Volvo 70 yachts. Most importantly it carries the very latest video, satellite and content production facilities aboard so the media crew is able to send live updates each day to the world media.

Published here are early drawing details of the new monohull yacht designed by the Farr office.
